International Non-Resident Tuition Waiver Application

Eligibility Requirements
1. Only international student-athletes seeking to earn a degree from SJSU may apply. Short-term, non-degree-seeking
students are not eligible.
2. Only admitted (e.g., entering freshman or transfer) or continuing students are eligible.
3. In addition to scholastic merit, applicants must demonstrate financial need.

Selection Criteria, Review Process, and Awards
Selection is based on a comprehensive and holistic review of application materials, including written essays, GPA, test
scores, and other evidence of scholastic ability and academic achievement. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.3
(B+) on a 4.0 scale, or an equivalent academic credential, from a recognized international secondary school or
post-secondary institution. The Undergraduate International Fee Waiver Committee will review all applications.
Award Decisions: Non-resident tuition fee waivers/reductions are granted for one academic year (fall and spring
semesters). Recipients are required to maintain an eligible GPA to continue receiving the award in the second semester.
Non-resident tuition fee waiver/reduction awards may vary from year to year, and the number of waivers/reductions
available is not guaranteed and is subject to funding availability. Note that being awarded a non-resident tuition fee
waiver does not waive the requirement for a student to provide financial documentation for admission and visa
purposes. Awardees must be enrolled in at least 10 units each semester in order to receive a non-resident tuition fee
waiver award.

Policy Background Information
Governed by Education Code Section 89706, fee waivers or tuition fee reductions for undergraduate degree-seeking
students are available only to non-resident undergraduate students who are citizens of foreign countries; they are not
available to non-resident domestic undergraduate students.
“Eligible matriculated non-resident undergraduate degree-seeking international students (1) must provide evidence of:
(a) a demonstrable financial need and (b) exceptional scholastic ability and prior scholastic achievement; and (2) must
enroll in at least 10 quarter or semester units each term. Importantly, student-athletes shall not be granted these waivers
based solely upon athletic ability or athlete status; however, such a student-athlete who otherwise meets the scholastic
requirements of Section 89706 may be granted a tuition fee waiver or tuition fee reduction independent of athletic skills
or athlete status.”
Information provided by the applicant will serve to document the applicant’s eligibility per Education Code Section
89706.
